Seattle is known as one of the most alluring and lively cities in the United States. It is situated on the shores of two large lakes and Puget Sound, and is almost completely surrounded by water. Beautiful mountain ranges stretch to the east and west, with immense Mount Rainier, the fifth highest peak in the lower 48 states, standing alone and in full view. The San Juan Islands, major rivers, and the Pacific Ocean beaches are also nearby. Within just an hour's drive of the city, Mt. Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park, and Olympic National Park provide a variety of terrain and climate, scenic hiking trails, and remote, rugged wilderness. Its location also makes it a convenient gateway to explore Alaska and western Canada. Opportunities for hiking, cycling, golf, wildlife watching, sea kayaking, sailing, fishing, and swimming abound!

Known for its world-famous cuisine and sidewalk espresso stands, Seattle is also home to a number of interesting attractions.

One of the most popular sites along the Lake Washington Ship Canallocks.jpg (37198 bytes) is the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, with navigational locks,
a fish ladder where you can witness salmon runs, a botanical garden, and a spillway dam. The bustling Pike Place Market is a great place to buy fresh seafood, farm produce, and baked goods, and to just sit back and take in the local scene. There are also a number of good local wineries and breweries to try. Some of the more chic shops and trendy pubs can be found in historic Pioneer Square's 19th-century warehouses and office buildings, while the observation tower at the top of the Space Needle provides excellent views. For an exciting close-up study of the Puget Sound ecosystem, be sure to visit the Seattle Aquarium.

spneedle.gif (14203 bytes)The opera and symphony, the ballet, numerous theatres and art galleries, and the art museum offer entertainment for arts and theatre fans, while those more inclined to sports can watch the Mariners professional baseball team in action. Seattle Center, with lots of restaurants and shops, is where concerts, festivals, and sports games are held. The nightlife is brimming with good beer, live jazz, blues, celtic music, and dancing, too.  A wide variety of transportation options, from intercity busses, shuttle services, and the monorail, to water taxis and ferry services, makes getting into and around the city easy.

Contrary to popular belief, one can expect mild and pleasant weather, with average temperatures of 42-70°F (5-21°C) during the summer months, and minimal rainfall. The nights can be cool so bring a light sweater or jacket.

See you in Seattle!
